Echoes Privacy Policy

The short version

Who is responsible

Echoes is developed by Antoni Gruba, an independent developer. If you have any questions about this policy or your information, contact [email protected].

Information stored on your device

Everything you create in Echoes is stored locally on your phone, in the app's private storage:

This information stays on your device unless you choose to export a backup. Deleting an entry removes it from your journal, and uninstalling the app deletes everything Echoes has stored on that device. Your phone's own backup service (for example Google's or Apple's device backup) may include the app's data, depending on your phone's settings.

Information sent for processing

Some features need an internet connection. When you use them, Echoes sends the following through the developer's server:

The developer's server only passes these requests on and returns the result to your phone. It does not store your recordings or entries. The hosting provider (Vercel) may keep standard technical logs, such as the time of a request and your IP address, for a short period to keep the service running and secure.

OpenAI and Hugging Face process this information to return the result, under their own privacy policies. OpenAI states that it does not use data sent through its API to train its models by default, and that it may keep it for up to 30 days to monitor for abuse.

Your journal entries may include personal or sensitive information, including information about your health or feelings. Only use the voice, mood and summary features if you are comfortable with this processing. You can always write typed entries and use the rest of the app without recording.

Permissions

You can change these permissions at any time in your device settings.

Notifications

If you allow notifications, Echoes can send you:

These notifications are scheduled on your phone by the app itself. No information is sent to the developer or to any notification service to deliver them. They may include the name you entered in the app and how many entries you've written, but never the content of your entries. You can change the reminder time or turn reminders off in the app's settings, or turn off notifications for Echoes in your device settings.

Backups

You can export a backup file of your journal and settings, and import it again later. The backup file is saved wherever you choose, and you are responsible for keeping it safe. Echoes does not upload backups anywhere.

Data sharing

Apart from the processing described above, your information is not shared with anyone. The developer does not sell, rent or trade your information, does not show ads and does not track you across other apps or websites.

Security

Information sent for processing travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Because your journal is stored on your phone, keeping your device secure, for example with a screen lock, also protects your journal.

Your choices and rights

Because your journal is stored on your device, you are in control of it: you can view, change and delete your entries in the app at any time, or delete everything by uninstalling it. Depending on where you live, you may also have rights under data protection law, such as the right to ask what information is held about you or to complain to a data protection authority. To ask a question or make a request, contact the email address above.

Not a medical service

Echoes is a journal. It is not a medical or mental health service, and moods and summaries are automatic estimates that can be wrong. If you are struggling, please reach out to someone you trust or find a helpline at findahelpline.com.

Children

Echoes is not intended for children under 16.

Changes to this policy

This policy may be updated as Echoes changes, for example when new features are added. Any changes will be published on this page with a new effective date.
